Munkenbeck+Marshall project, Stephen Marshall Partner in charge
The major development of the area around the Grand Union Canal in Paddington south of the elevated Westway has been in progress since 1998 when the Paddington Waterside Partnership was formed. Over £2 billion has been invested in major office development and some residential and this scheme for Chelsfield plc provides 311 flats on a long thin site on the road leading to the corporate HQ of Marks and Spencer and Orange telecommunications.
A diagram of linked pavilions not unlike Wharf Road was developed with landscaping between them. The heights vary between 12 and 18 storeys with angled glass elevations and curved balconies. Pools of water have to be crossed on long gang planks which makes arriving and leaving an agreeable experience in this somewhat sterile area of new commercial development.
